Pipe Lagging

Pipe & tank insulation.
A large amount of heat in your hot water system is lost through the pipes and tank. Insulating the pipes is  essential when minimising heat loss and saving on hot water bills. When minimising heat loss from water pipes it is most important to insulate the hot water pipes leading out from the hot water tank and any exposed piping that is subject to a cold environment. There are two main types of pipe insulation (also know as ‘lagging’)  one is a foam type (shown above right) , the other is a glass fibre type (shown below right). There are however other types available on the market.  Both types of insulation come in a variety of sizes, usually from 15mm upwards. When insulating your hot water system it is also worth remembering that exposed cold water pipes have an air cooling effect and will freeze quicker than hot water pipes,  so some pipes are best insulated at the same time. Savings annually could be around £30.
Below is a basic diagram of a cold water tank as you would find in your loft. The yellow areas show pipe insulation and a tank jacket (typically glass fibre filled) installed.

The costs of installing water system insulation varies greatly from property to property. The cost is determined by the overall length of pipe work that requires insulation, size of the pipes & tank, and access considerations. Some alternative products also allow for aesthetical aspects to be taken into consideration.
